Our collection includes a range of exotic rodents, dwarf rats and small mammals, with a particular focus on species rarely seen in private collections. Through thoughtful husbandry, responsible breeding and educational content, we showcase the natural history, behaviour and specialist care requirements of these remarkable animals.

About the Collection

A Specialist Small Mammal Collection (With a focus on rodents)

Exotic Rodentry was established from a long-standing interest in rodents, natural history and responsible animal care. The collection has developed around species that are biologically interesting, behaviourally engaging and often underrepresented in mainstream animal keeping.

We currently work with a variety of species, including various spiny mice, deer mice, acacia rats, mouse-like hamsters, Spinifex hopping mice, lesser bamboo rats and other small mammals.

Every species is maintained with attention to natural behaviour, environmental enrichment, appropriate social structure and long-term welfare.

Education

We believe good animal keeping begins with understanding. Our educational content explores taxonomy, natural history, behaviour, reproduction, genetics, conservation and responsible care.

Husbandry

Our enclosures are designed around the needs of the species, not simply the convenience of the keeper. We prioritise enrichment, structure, cover, nesting opportunities, diet variety and species-appropriate environments.

Conservation

Many rodents play important ecological roles as seed dispersers, prey species, burrowers, pollinators and ecosystem engineers. We aim to promote conservation awareness and challenge the idea that rodents should only be viewed as pests.

Responsible Breeding

Breeding is approached carefully and purposefully, with welfare, health, temperament, genetic diversity and long-term planning at the centre of every project.
